When placing a loved one in an assisted living residence, you'll want to ask the right questions about the quality and safety levels of the nursing homes in your specific area.

It is important to ask the right nursing home questions to guarantee you have done your due diligence and feel good about knowing you went the extra mile for yourself or your loved one.

Asking the right folks about nursing homes is critical to finding the answers you need - just because you made a few visits to local facilities and asked the staff members questions doesn't mean that you've done enough due diligence to know everything you need to know - you have to go outside of the actual facilities as workers tend to have biased views.

In addition to the information nursing home staff members offer, consider a few alternative sources:

-Local doctors: if you don't know of any, feel free to open up the phone book or Google doctors in your area. Doctors can provide great insight to senior living facilities as they occasionally do work their.

-Be social: social networks are a great way to hear about good and bad experiences with the local facilities. Chances are if your immediate network doesn't recommend any someone they know might have some good answers.

-BBB: the Better Business Bureau is always a great resource to figure out what facilities in your area have had complains in the past.

-Watch Organizations: since the Internet has made a splash there are many watchdog organizations out there - including the Abuse Blog (nursinghomesabuseblog.com). Feel free to Google and look at the top results - chances are you can interact with these blogs and forums and get the right answers you need.

-Police: the local police might have some insight to what has gone on in the past few years with regards to local facilities in your area. Don't be afraid to ask them the tough questions!

As you can see, the list could go on and on. These five sources are a great start - but you should do more due diligence to ensure you've done everything possible to get the right answers for your nursing home questions. Before you know it you'll have a much better grip on your concerns and hopefully be able to choose the place that is right for you or your family member!
