You probably don't want to be one of those people who end up working well into their 70s and beyond just because you cannot afford to retire. Taking steps now to make sure that you retire in the future can be an excellent way to prepare for your future. So, what steps should you be taking?

There are a few things that you can do to help you prepare for retirement.

1. Contribute To Your Employers 401k

Many employers have some sort of a 401k plan available for you where you can have money automatically taken out of your paycheck and invested into the plan.

This plan is an excellent way to not only give you a way of investing your money for the future, but it can also give you a nice little tax break as well, because all money invested into the plan is not taxed until it is withdrawn. If you have a large income and need some extra tax write offs this can be a great place to get them.

Your employer will have more 401k information for you to look at about your specific plan and the options that it has.

2. Save Money

It is a good idea to save your money. If you have an emergency fund saved up it will help you out if there is ever an emergency where you need to pull that money out. For instance, if you need to go to the doctors and it isn't covered by your insurance or if your car breaks down. All of these things can lead to large unexpected bills, but as long as you have money saved up they can hopefully just be absorbed by that savings account.

3. Start Looking For Alternative Income

After you retire your checks from work stop coming in the mail, but your bills don't. Most people plan on dealing with this by just saving up enough money to last them until they die. This can be a very depressing thought.

Instead it is always nice to have some extra income coming in. If you are a craftsman maybe build something and sell it to your neighbors and let word of mouth spread. Or maybe write a book and get it published to see what it brings you.

Looking into building extra income streams can not only help you financially. They can also be fun and give you something to do after you retire.
