Ecuador... a country off the radar, offers very cheap retirement living. Americans and Canadians alike are discovering Ecuador as a cheap place to retire. It is cheap in price only...the country has lots to offer. The currency of Ecuador will be familiar to most of us, it is the US dollar. Americans are also well liked and expats report that the locals are very friendly towards them making it easy to become absorbed into the local communities. One can easily live very well on $10,000 to 15,000 a year per couple, that is cheap folks. Cheap living includes rental property, best to start with, as well as purchasing a home. It so reasonable in fact many American expats have two Ecuadorian residences. One might be in Cotacachi, or Cuenca , it will be in the Andes but not too cold because Ecuador sits on the Equator. If you get sick in Ecuador you will find a doctors visit will cost around $15. They also make house calls for the same money or slightly higher. Domestic help is $30 a week. To retire in Ecuador the Ecuadoran Government requires you prove a monthly income of $900 a month from a pension. Social Security is of course accepted. That speaks volumes by itself as to the low cost of living in Ecuador.. The climate of Ecuador is varied. From jungles, to mountain peaks of the Andes, to the beaches on the Pacific coast Ecuador has a climate for everyone. You want a change you do not have to go far to get a new view and temperature. There are currently 12 million people living in Ecuador. If cheap living is your only motivator for living in Ecuador, you probably will be disappointed. You would be unhappy moving anywhere just because it is less costly. Instead if you have a sense of adventure, are self confident, and interested in living well...all in friendly environs, consider Ecuador as a place to retire.
