You may have become used to having certain comforts, and you will want those in retirement too. You'll prefer to keep your expenses low, but you'll insist upon an acceptable standard of living. In fact, most people want to retire overseas in affordable places in order to lower their current living expenses and perhaps to start putting a few bucks away for travel or to fulfill their hearts' finest desires.

Let's say, you've done some research and conclude that you can move to Ecuador or Panama on $1000 a month; that could work for you abroad, even though that income wouldn't go very far in the United States. The previous example was only hypothetical and should not be considered an actual income comparison.
