Everyone has a 401k and everyone seems to follow the basic 401k tips which tell them to to invest all their money into the plan for the long term and hope for the best. But, that is as far as most people go. They do not take the time to learn about their plan and try to figure out how to get even more out of it.

So, before it is too late here is some basic 401k information.

You most likely know about all of the tax benefits that come with investing your money. The money is taken out of your paycheck before it can be taxed and invested into the plan. But where is it invested into exactly?

In nearly all of the cases the money is being invested into mutual funds. This might not be the best choice when it comes down to it because most mutual funds fail to beat the average return of the stock market over the long term. So, you would have been better off buying a bunch of random stocks in the market and holding onto them.

This is why if you want to start learning how to invest your own money it can defiantly pay off pretty big. Not all companies will allow you to have a self directed 401k plan, but if your company does it is something to consider. The potential can be a lot greater if you do your research.

Another thing to look into is to start Buying Real Estate with 401k money. Of course you cannot buy a house or an apartment building in your 401k plan. But what you can do is invest into something called an REIT or a Real Estate Investment Trust.

This trust basically takes the money that is invested into it and buys things like apartment buildings and commercial buildings and profits from the income and from the appreciation. Then each of the investors makes money as the real estate investment makes money.

This can help you to diversify your holdings a little bit so that you are not as dependent on the ups and downs of one market.
