There is little doubt that debt is a depressing fact of modern life. It can spoil the mood of everything you do.

Birmingham, a city in the West Midlands area of the UK is one place where this effect is felt most strongly. It was once a booming industrial area with a huge and prospering manufacturing base.

That is now gone, and with the main car giants themselves have gone all the smaller support industries that kept it supplied

Many home-owners, especially those that bought in the late two thousands - are left with massive debt, and a home they can no longer afford.

The options available are not ones that are lightly considered. Mortgaging or re-mortgaging a home, or possibly selling is one option to consider. Perhaps downsizing a property and using the cash to service the existing debt.

However, an issue arises when it comes to selling a home these days;

There are simply not enough people in the market to buy homes, at almost any cost.

Birmingham in the UK is awash with "For Sale" signs. Many have been in place for months. Home owners I meet tell me they often go weeks without any contact from their estate agents. Some have not even had a single viewing after being on the market for many months.

We are told that we are coming out of recession. But that seems to be an almost "mathematical" statement. Yes we are technically coming out of a recession, but in many areas the housing market is actually still declining in the UK.

The West Midlands housing market is stagnant. This is a situation that even the most optimistic estate agent (and let's face it, estate agents are normally optimistic) says will remain for the next two years.

Finding a buyer when you are desperate to sell can seem a long and frustrating process.
