The reason that 95% of all diets fail is pure adaptive evolution. Think back to High School and the Theory of Evolution. "What does the Theory of Evolution have to do with weight loss?" A whole lot, evidently. The human race evolved over millions of years through long periods of famine and relatively short periods of abundance. As a result we have become creatures of opportunity, getting our food wherever and whenever we could find it. So the human metabolism has also adapted to help us survive these periods. "That sounds very interesting, but what does that have to do with my diet tanking after a few weeks?" Most diets work on the principle of changing or limiting caloric intake. When this happens, your metabolism interprets this as a famine or natural disaster. It evolved that way. So, in order to keep us alive through the famine, our metabolisms slow down. This is what creates the infamous diet flatlining and the sluggishness we all feel on most diets. It's just the metabolism's way of keeping us from dying so fast from starvation. "So what can we do?" We can't undo evolution, but we can consistently lose weight and keep it off through something called "calorie shifting". "What is calorie shifting?" You simply lower your caloric intake below your baseline level for a week to 10 days. It's been established that the average metabolism will start to slow down after 11 days, as if you were experiencing a famine. To prevent the metabolic slowdown, you then just raise your caloric intake ABOVE your baseline for the next week to 10 days. The metabolism will then speed up again as if the famine were over. After it speeds up, you then return your caloric level back BELOW your baseline. You see? That way, you constantly "trick" your metabolism into never slowing down, and you prevent the sluggishness. There's a lot more to it, of course, since there are other things you must do. For example, you can't just eat ANY calories. You need 4 meals a day of the right kind of calories and up to 10 glasses of water a day. I'll be discussing that in future articles.
