The first type of sweat we release comes from the eccrine glands and has no substantial odor. It is mainly water, a little bit of salt and some urea and sugar. When this fluid moistens our skin it results in a softening of what is known as keratin which resides in the epidermal layer. This then provides bacteria with an opportunity to feed on this keratin with body odor being the undortunate result. When this combination occurs in an area like the armpit, this smell can become foul far more rapidly, due to the warm, moist nature of the area. These are the ideal conditions for the bacteria to do their nasty work. The second form of sweat is known as apocrine, with these glands being located in the groin, scalp and underarms. This sweat has a higher fat content and causes a stronger odor. Once again it is the work of the bacteria who are using the warmth and moisture of these areas to their advantage. Therefore a major part of preventing body odor is to limit the amount of sweating that occurs in the body, and in particular those trouble spots where moisture is retained more easily. It is also improtant to regualarly dry these sweaty spots before bacteria can move in and start producing the odor as they feed on the keratin. How can you prevent sweat from being released? Antiperspirants are designed to inhibit the ability of the glands to release sweat. they range in strength to suit a range of severities so ask your doctor for advice if the common supermarket variety doesn't do the job. Hygiene also plays a part. Using an anti-bacterial soap is a great way of keeping on top of the problem areas. You should also make sure that after every shower you dry yourself completely. And finally make sure you wear clothes that allow for good air circulation. this will help dry the sweat before it has a chance to become a breeding ground for bacteria.
