Kenya has for long drawn large numbers of safari seekers from many parts of the world. The beautiful East African country has about 60 national parks and reserves - which are home to more than 4 million wild animals. These wildlife sanctuaries provide game safari enthusiasts with numerous chances to relish fascinating game drives within impressive landscapes. The Maasai Mara National Park is easily the most popular Kenya safari destination. Situated 260km from the capital Nairobi, Maasai Mara is renowned for the Great Wildebeest Migration - an annual event that sees over 2.5 million wildebeest, zebras and Thompson's gazelles moving into the reserve from Tanzania's Serengeti National Park in search of greener pastures. The event takes place between July and October with the reverse happening around November. It takes about 5 hours to reach Maasai Mara by road and 45 minutes by air. There are scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to the Maasai Mara. Situated some 300km from Nairobi, the Tsavo National Park is among Kenya's most popular safari destinations. The national park which is popular for its population of lions (widely referred to as 'man eaters of the Tsavo') is split into two parts: the Tsavo East and the Tsavo West. The sections add up to form one of the largest national parks in Kenya. Tsavo West borders the Serengeti Plains and it hosts a wide range of wild animals. Although the national park is easily reached by road via Taveta- Sipe Road, some visitors prefer to make use of the Kamboyo, Tsavo Gate, Kilagrui and Maxtar airstrips. While on a Kenya safari, you should make a point of visiting the Amboseli National Park. Located 240 km from Nairobi, next to the imposing Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is one of the most popular safari destinations in the country. It was gazetted as a national park in 1974 and is recognized as the best place in Africa where one can view free-ranging elephants at closest range. The snowcapped summit of the mountain seems to dominate every aspect of the park. Animals present here include cheetah, elephants, buffalo and many others. The national park is easily reached from Nairobi through the Nairobi-Arusha Road. The Aberdare National Park, situated about 160km from Nairobi, is also among Kenya's most popular safari destinations. It was accorded national status in 1950. Aberdare is renown for its tree-house hotels - The Treetops and The Ark. In 1952, Treetops hosted the then young princess Elizabeth on the eve that she became queen. The national park hosts an incredibly wide array of wild animals such as lions, black leopards, the uncommon bongo antelope, rhinos and many others. The Nairobi National Park is very popular among safari goers who do not want to venture into the Kenyan jungles. Located about 7km from the Nairobi central business district, the park is the world's only natural reserve placed within a city. Occupying 117 sq km, the national park was founded in 1945 thereby becoming Kenya's first national park. It has an Orphanage that serves as a temporary home to young deserted or injured wild animals as they await to be returned to the wild. Among the animals present in Nairobi National Park include the Cheetah, leopard, buffalo, hippos, crocodile and many others.
