All of us should eat a balanced diet. This is especially true for children who's bodies are still growing. For a child who has become obese, they face a whole host of physical and emotional problems. I will suggest a few things that can be done to help prevent your child from becoming an obese teenager. The physical ailments that occur when a child is overweight are the most immediate threat to your child's health and so need to be addressed quickly. There are many complications to being overweight and some of the major ones include asthma, diabetes, heart problems, and even cancer. The added problem of many of these health problems is that once they develop they tend to be chronic conditions and will follow your child through their entire life. That is why it is critical to address your child's obesity immediately. Besides physical problems they are a host of emotional problems that accompany obesity in children. These include mental abuse in the form of taunting and teasing, or bullying as well as other emotional conditions such as depression. Children especially teens are cruel and so a child in their teens with a weight problem can expect an inordinate amount of emotional abuse. This will many times cause a child to withdraw which furthers damages their ability to develop proper social skills. It also causes anger and resentment to build up in a child and can stay with the child through the remainder of their lives. There are things you can do to help a child lose and maintain their proper weight: 1. Search the net, magazines, and books and come up with a plan to serve healthy, nutritious meals to your family. Also learn to prepare foods in ways that reduce calories. Grilling is much better than frying when it comes to meat preparation. Once you become an expert you can prepare great tasting meals that are low in caloric intake. 2. Serve reasonable portions. When you cook be sure and only cook enough for the people being served. Do not overcook. Incorporate plenty of vegetables in your meals. Check the calorie amounts for foods and for higher calorie ones serve smaller portions. 3. Do not have high calorie snacks and junk out for your child to eat. If other family members can and like junk food make them buy it and store it out of sight of others. 4. If needed, encourage your child to join a weight loss group tailored for children or teenagers. This will help with social development as well as helping them to loose weight. Teenagers are heavily influenced by their peer group. 5. Become an expert in diet and nutrition. Encourage your child to also become educated in the proper foods to eat. 6. Get your child into an exercise routine. As they are still developing it is very important for a child to have daily exercise. Maybe consider using sedentary activities such as playing video games as a reward for doing some sort of strenuous exercise routine. Be sure and point out that exercise will help them lose weight by increasing metabolism. While you may encounter some initial resistance from your child, you will find that they are glad you are helping them achieve their weight loss goals. Your role should be similar to that of a cheerleader, never be negative. If you have ever had to diet you now how incredibly hard it can be. Remember, getting your child down to their target weight now can avoid serious emotional and physical problems later.
