There are several ways to participate in a yoga retreat in Mexico. You can visit a Mexico yoga retreat center on your own, join a group for a yoga vacation, or design your own yoga getaway.

Mexico is easily reachable from the United States and Canada, and for that reason it has long been a popular place to take a vacation. So it is no surprise that now that yoga is more popular, there are plenty of options for yoga-specific travel in Mexico.

Winter in Mexico is warm and sunny in most places. This makes it an even more appealing place to practice yoga, enjoy the sun, and shed stress.

Golf, snorkeling, whale watching, city tours, and jungle walks can keep you or your non-yogi travel partner occupied when you're not in a yoga class or workshop.

Book a Trip to One of Mexico's Many Yoga Retreats

Many retreat centers now target the yoga crowd almost exclusively. There are retreat centers outside historic colonial towns like Cuernavaca and San Miguel de Allende. There are also many retreats along the Pacific Coast, including Baja California. Or stay in a center in Chiapas, where Mayan culture is alive, or secluded in the jungles of Veracruz.

Yucatan is a popular retreat location, as there are retreat centers from Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres all the way down the coast through Tulum to Lake Bacalar.

You can visit these centers on your own, and at any time of year. Many places are close to international airports with direct flights from the U.S. Some accommodations are luxurious, while others are simple. Prices vary from $50 to over $200 per night.

Join a Yoga Tour

A popular way of doing yoga in Mexico is to join a group organized by a teacher or group back home. (You can also find any number advertised on Google.) In a group, transportation, accommodations, classes, and many meals are arranged for you.

Airfare usually isn't included in the price of a group trip. Depending on the location, expect a week-long yoga retreat to cost $800 to $2,000 and up.

The benefit of joining a group is that you don't have to think about any of the logistics, simple reserve your space, get on a flight, and enjoy.

Design Your Own Mexico Yoga Retreat

If you can find a place to sleep, places to eat, and a place for your personal yoga practice, then it is easy to design your own retreat. Hotels and bed-and-breakfasts often have beautiful rooftops or gardens that would offer themselves to your own yoga practice. Some may even offer yoga on the grounds or have recommendations as to where to find a local class.

As yoga has become more popular among Mexico's middle class and expatriates, many communities now have yoga studios with daily classes, much like the yoga centers back home. Independent teachers also offer classes - sometimes by donation - on the beach, in a park, or at a local community center.

Designing your own retreat can be the least costly option. There are still places in Mexico where you can find a beachfront cabana for $20 a night. This also gives you more options as to what parts of Mexico you visit. But it also takes the most work, as you will need to scout out places to stay, places to eat, and places that offer yoga classes.

Whether you design your own trip, join a group, or visit a retreat center, your Mexico yoga retreat will be a time to remember, far away from the winter cold.
