The NFL is the dominant force in American sports; it is in fact the only sport which can boast of having the attention of the majority of American fans. One thing which makes the NFL unique among American sports is that it keeps the attention of fans even during its off season. Year round, the NFL is in the news and at the forefront of the minds of fans.

While all of the professional sports have player drafts, the NFL draft is the only of them which draws a significant television audience. The NFL draft is the object of speculation for months before it begins each April. There are guesses made about which players will be drafted by which team, which of the NFL franchises will come away from the draft the strongest team, what coups and disappointments will happen and so on.

The teams and players begin preparing for the draft almost the second the Super Bowl has concluded. Players announce their status as free agents and this keeps fans excited and the NFL in the headlines. Fans keep on the lookout for any news during the pre-draft season.

Even as the NBA and NHL are about to enter their playoffs, sports fans are more focused on the NFL draft. Even the opening of the baseball season is smaller news than the draft. Among American sports, only the NFL can manage to remain the center of attention without even having any games on the schedule.

Once the training camps open in the summer, fans begin to watch and discuss how the teams are preparing for the upcoming season and the player's attitudes towards their teams. Fans also begin to discuss which players will end up in the coveted starter spots for the season.

NFL preseason games are nationally televised and even when these games star second-string and even third-season players, they draw huge audiences of fans starved for NFL action. The preseason games for no other sport draw this sort of attention; not basketball, not hockey, only the NFL.

Then once the season starts, week after week the sport builds on itself. Each week is of extreme importance because there is only 16 games. Although, that is now being talked about in terms of expanding the number, because the popularity is so vast. As the playoffs approach and teams have a chance to make or miss the postseason, every game is intense and every game is taken seriously.

Being an NFL fan is truly a year round job. If all you do is watch a few games during the season, you'll be at a loss for who is who on your own team and what the expectations around the league are. This is all discussed endlessly during the off season, during the draft and training camps, as the NFL manages to find a way to stay popular no matter when it is.
