It is a possibility that a toddler might develop a slight stutter when they are learning to speak. A parent's natural reaction is to show concern, but this concern should never be made evident to a toddler. A toddler should not be allowed to get alarmed by this natural progression.

When a parent notices a slight repetition of words in a toddler speaking patterns, patience is the key. if you suspect your toddler of beginning to stutter, you should do the following:

1.) Make sure that when speaking to your toddler you speak clear and precise to encourage them follow the same speech patterns. Talking to your toddler more slowly than usual will cause them to enunciate their words better which can eliminate their stutter altogether.

2.) Do not rush your toddler if he or she is stuck on a word. Give them all the time they need to finish their sentence. Giving them time to finish their sentence will alarm them that anything is wrong.

3.) Do not acknowledge to the toddler that he or she has a problem. If they express concern, reassure them that it is a normal part of growing up. You never want to alarm the child, they might become ashamed and go into a shell where they refuse to speak publicly.

4.) Do not stop you child in mid speech and never finish their sentences for them. This will encourage them to continue working through the problem. When you finish a toddler's sentence, you make them feel as if they cannot do it on their own.

The toddlers years are a delicate stage that needs to be handled carefully especially if they are developing a stutter. Stuttering in toddlers if dealt with correctly, can be resolved in a very short period of time. If the problem continues, then a therapist may be needed.
