Starting Over with an Outdoor Swing

Gardens can be tranquil, pleasant places to spend time, or unpleasant and crowded feeling, or bare and stark. It all depends on how you decide to design them, and whether you take care in putting together a garden that's right for you.

One of the best ways I have found to create an outdoor garden space that I love spending time in is by starting with one central item, such as an outdoor swing. Take this item and find the perfect place for it and then build the rest of the garden around it. Create a unified look based on that one item.

The bigger items you place in your garden will have a significant impact on the end results. Plan ahead so that the item you choose will help you create a unified look as you add additional items.

If you plan to work around one central piece, choose it wisely. Keep your overall look and garden in mind. This will help you avoid creating a space that doesn't work well for you and that looks thrown together without thought.

When you are selecting your garden furniture take you time to consider what you like. Choose something you know you will enjoy using and looking at. You want it to be an item that you will love for a long time. Don't despair if you find it difficult to find additional items to go with it at first. Just keep looking and before you know it, it will all fall together.

The first time I designed an outdoor garden I found a piece of furniture that I loved when it was in the store. But when I got it home, it just didn't work. I didn't think of the whole picture when I selected it and consequently didn't consider how it would actually look once I place it in the garden. I was never comfortable with that piece and neither was anyone else in the family.

So, what did I do to remedy this problem? I got rid of all my garden furniture and decorations. It might seem extreme, but I wasn't going to be happy, and adding to a garden I just didn't like wasn't worth it to me. I gave away all my old pieces to friends and family and via online groups that deal with free stuff, and I started over with an outdoor swing that I really loved, and that I could picture in my garden space.

I have had that beautiful swing in my garden every since. It has remained the center piece of everything else I do. If I'm considering buying an item to add to the garden I ask myself if it will look good with the swing and if it will fit with what I visualized originally for my garden space. Consequently, I now love my garden. It is the beautiful, peace place I had always envisioned it would be. And I love spending time there relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.
