Knights of yore were unable to work unless they were fully equipped with a suit of armor. Attacking dragons and defending the cause in the Crusades just couldn't be done unless properly dressed. Alas, knights and armor are a thing of the past (unless you attend a Renaissance Fair near you) and most armor seen today is hanging in a museum.
It seems that men's suits may be the armor of this century. Having served a purpose for a few centuries, it seems that with the more casual atmosphere in the work place, church and other formerly formal events, men's suits are required and worn less and less often. In fact, it may now be that many men have only one suit: the one they are "married and buried" in. While in the mid- 1950s many professional men wore suits to their offices daily, today you often see these same professional men in khakis and a collared sports shirt. Of course, attorneys appearing in court and executives appearing before a Congressional hearing still wear the 21st century armor - the men's suit. Why have men stopped wearing suits to the office? Is there something about the suit itself, or has something changed radically in our culture? Both! Men's suits can be very restrictive and unless a man can afford a tailor most suits never fit precisely right. Also, the best fabric for men's suits, wool, requires expensive care and is often hot and itchy. In addition, suits must be worn with shirts and ties that are also very uncomfortable after an extended period of time. So, the lack of comfort in a suit may have contributed to it demise. The knight certainly wasn't comfortable in his heavy armor and I am certain that once the era passed, they were so relieved to just wear their jerkins, the more casual and practical alternative to a metal encasement. There is a decline in the dressing sense, from casual to "don't care" kind. I have seen serious minded professionals in shorts and tee shirts. Not long ago, people were known by what they wore and now the general belief is your apparel does not signify your intelligence and smartness does not need external guises. Suits are cheap to afford and you could not be doing the day to day work in a suit and repairing any damage to it is not cheap either. The consolation is some suits can never get outdated. Wouldn't you still want to see your groom in neat tuxedo? Young lads of the present day do try to impress their dates with suits procured with difficulty. Purists still believe in them, and you will not see men in solemn occasions wearing casuals, and that applies for fresh career seekers too, and their outfits clearly indicate their intentions. 7. How do we safeguard the men's suits? Encouraging them in our day to day living just like any other indispensable item would do the trick. Companies should come up with allowances to encourage their workers to wear them. They should even think of hiring them as it necessitates instead of splurging large amounts of money on them. Whether men's suits fade out of style or not, we will all fondly remember the days when men dressed for the office to provide and protect just like we fondly remember the knight's of old in their armor.
