Thread count? It can be quite puzzling. Numbers can be misleading sometimes. So the higher the thread-count the better the quality, correct?

Not always when it comes to bed linens, even if thread count is one of the very first things shoppers are looking for.

Let's get thread count briefly explained. Very basically, threadcount refers to the weave of a fabric. A fabric weave is made of vertical and horizontal intertwined yarns. Threadcount is the total number of threads in a square inch of fabric combined, vertical and horizontal. For example a threadcount of 400 would imply 200 horizontal threads and 200 vertical threads. All things being equal, a higher threadcount would indicate a softer feeling fabric.

But not not all bed linens are created equal and a higher threadcount doesn't always indicate a better quality or more luxurious feeling sheet.

Take some time to learn more about luxury linens to be sure you get exactly what you are looking for.

Yes, you can have amazing sheets that feels like butter each and every time!

First, you only want fabrics woven with single ply yarns. Double or even triple ply is only good for toilet paper! Just think about it. Multiple ply yarns only make the fabric thicker and coarse. Single ply sheets are lightweight and feel softer with a richer drape.

Going back to the whole thread count confusion. Higher thread count does not always make for nicer sheets as manufacturers can inflate thread count by using doubled or tripled strands of yarn. It can be deceptive and confusing and is one of the most common reason that a higher count sheet does not always feel silkier and softer than a lower thread count.

Yarn quality has also a big impact on how sheets feel. Premium quality, long staple cotton fibers are woven into the finest bed linens. The type of weave is also something that will affect the final product. Sateen weave makes truly luxurious bed linens. It creates a supple, smooth texture with a silky shine.

Among all the others Egyptian and Pima cottons raw fibers have earned a reputation for luxury in the world of bed linens. Other natural fibers with unique properties have recently gained popularity. More and more people today prefer sheets that are chemical-free and comfy for the environment as well as for their beds. Likewise, sheets made from bamboo fiber are more commonly becoming available. Bamboo has been proved to have antimicrobial properties as well.

The one main advice to anyone shopping for luxury linens is to rely on your own tactile sense. Try at least a pillow case to see how it feels and how it looks on your bed. You should fall in love with your new luxury sheets, or send them back for a full refund. With bed sheets, comfort is everything. If the sheets don't feel soft and smooth in the beginning they won't definitely get better after several washings. Luxury linens are definitely a high ROI investment for your comfort. Don't trade down here.
