We are inundated with stressful situations every day of our lives; dealing with the kids, the bills, the health problems, the in-laws, the car; and most of us don't even have to worry about what it is like to live with the effects of excessive sweating. But there is a small percentage of the population that does have to worry about that, and when you are part of that group, you know just how life-altering and oppressive armpit sweating can become.

The most common way that axillary hyperhidrosis, or armpit sweating, manifests itself is by creating large wet circles under your arms on your clothing, or sweat running uncontrolled down your sides quite often accompanied by a foul odor because the bacteria that cause the odor are living and thriving in the sweat. Most people that are afflicted with armpit sweating are also troubled by other forms of excessive sweating, like hand sweating (where your hands are clammy and wet to the touch); or foot sweating that is the culprit in the affliction known as "smelly feet" and can get so overly pronounced that you can actually slide in your own shoes because of the wetness.

Finding a remedy that will work is also an obstacle that sufferers of armpit sweating have to overcome. Most people like to make a good first impression when they go out in public, and with all the stressors that we have in our lives today; keeping our emotions under control and so keeping the sweating down to a manageable level so we look our best at all times, is a real challenge. Approximately 1% of the general population is afflicted with this condition and they can tell you horror stories of blouses or shirts being soaked completely and stained with sweat and odor, even outside jackets being involved; when they were to stand up in front of co-workers at a meeting, or meet a client for the first time and appeared as though they had been digging ditches all morning in their work clothes.

Let's take a look at what actually goes on at the technical side of the problem; what causes the excessive sweating in the first place and what can be done. The sweating is triggered usually by some emotional or stress based factor that stimulates the glands in the skin to start producing sweat. There are two types of glands involved here: the apocrine glands, and the eccrine glands. They are found in the layers of the dermis near the juncture of the subcutaneous fat layer and each has its own function. The apocrine glands are the ones that produce the thicker part of the sweat and are actual outgrowths of the hair follicles. This thicker sweat is the portion of the sweat that the bacteria are attracted to that are found on the skin surface, and they begin to multiply and have a party in the volumes of sweat coming their way, and the end result is odor. The eccrine glands are the ones that produce the watery part of the sweat and are involved mainly with thermal regulation or keeping the body cooled.

If you are suffering from a form of armpit sweating, one thing you can do is to try and treat it with the more conservative forms of medicine that are available in the market place before trying something more invasive, like surgery. Medicines like Odaban, Maxim, Botox, and Drysol are readily available and do work for some people, but others may not have as much luck; and with the extreme forms of excessive sweating, only surgery can help.

If you are looking for a 100% cure rate with surgery for any form of armpit sweating or excessive sweating, you are fooling yourself. Non of the surgical procedures available can offer that guarantee and some of them have side effects that you should consider before thinking about surgery. For example; if you opt for one of the surgery types available which is excising the skin, then you must be prepared for the possibility of loss of mobility in the affected area post-surgery, and some scarring of the skin. With the other form of surgery, superficial liposuction; the glands themselves are removed with minimal scarring.

More and more control is being exercised these days when it comes to excessive sweating in any form, but most notably, armpit sweating. The newer forms of technology that are out on the market, and the more advanced training that the doctors get in this field help to ensure that the help people seek for this problem is not that elusive any more. Help in the form of treatments or surgery is available, and those folks that suffer behind shuttered windows and doors because of embarrassment can now be freed of this scourge and live life as it was meant to be lived.
