Mombasa, Kenya's second largest city, is situated on the Indian ocean coast, about 480km from Nairobi, the capital. Scuba diving, snorkeling, dhow cruises, sport fishing and romantic dinners are possible in the city of Mombasa. It is also possible to enjoy historical and cultural attractions within the region. Fort Jesus, which was built in 1593 by Portuguese, is for example one of the most popular historical landmarks along the entire east African coast. Hells Kitchen is the other well celebrated site, situated just above 30 kilometers from Malindi. The site consists a spectacular canyon formed as a result of erosion and the mining of iron. Other nearby attractions like the Portuguese chapel, Vasco Da Gama's pillar, Watamu Village, and Gede ruins also assert Malindi's position as a great destination. You can travel to Malindi from Mombasa both by road and by air. Lamu archipelago, situated some 265 km north of Mombasa, is a good destination for anyone interested in learning about the Swahili culture. The archipelago consists of six large islands and many smaller ones. Although it si remotely located, Lamu has a large number of tourist attractions and activities. If you are interested in learning more about the history and culture of the Swahili, then Lamu is the place you must visit. Comprising of six main islands and several smaller ones, the Lamu archipelago is home to many attractions and fun travel activities. Lamu is situated 265 Km north of Mombasa. Overally, the Kenyan coast is a great destination throughout the year. Since the country is located at the equator, it enjoys a mostly warm tropical climate. If you want to travel to Kenya, you will most likely need an entry visa. Nationals of all commonwealth countries, ncluding the UK and Canada, are exempted from this visa requirement. Holders of US passports and many others can obtain the visa at the airport or at the border crossing points.
