Whether you are into business, managing a sports team, a classroom, a school, an NGO, a government or indeed a family, there are systems and procedures that are advocated in order to be successful. When I partnered with a network marketing company called LifePath Unlimited, I was encouraged to "just follow the system". Certainly, systems and procedures have their place since they make life a whole lot easier. Companies such as LifePath Unlimited have a "turn key system". By following the system, business associates are assured of success. However if success was primarily determined by having a great system in place, how can anyone fail? The fact is, in LifePath Unlimited and in every organization it is people that run systems. So given that yes we do need systems, what is the most important factor of all, without which success is not possible? Clearly it is mindset. What's the point of having a fantastic system if the people running it have an attitude whereby the appropriate behaviors that are vital for success are simply not forth coming? LifePath Unlimited like any company, have an attrition rate that has nothing to do with it's systems. In other words, there are peak performers and there are those, for whatever reason, decide to quit. More to the point, mindset gives rise to behavior. Successful LifePath Unlimited business owners, think positively, turn up for work every day, negotiate obstacles and so on. Great systems are validated when human beings exhibit the right behaviors, are proactive and follow the system. When people emphasize systems above all else, they create human organizations that lack soul. LifePath Unlimited is a company in the personal development industry and unlike some of it's competitors has been able to create a congruency between the business side of the company and the pursuit of human growth. Soul is elevated and not sacrificed in the mad pursuit of profits. So how can we understand the relationship between human behavior and systems? Both are necessary and exist in a relationship similar to the relationship between mind and body. Human beings through their behavior (mind) creates, works, fixes and replaces systems (body). In my LifePath Unlimited business, should the system become outdated, we the people will build a better one.
