How I Stopped Compulsive Overeating: I became a Certified Nutritionist, Holistic Health Practitioner and Specialist in Eating Disorders. I wrote and published a 400 plus page treatment program for compulsive overeating based on everything I had learned. Compulsive Overeating Help for you: The first thing in the program that we discuss is self criticism. When you constantly criticize yourself you are creating negative feelings that only add to the self doubt and bad feelings you may already have. You are adding fuel to the fire and it does no good to be "mean" to yourself. You wouldn't say the things you are saying about yourself to your best friend about her would you? Then why would you do it to yourself? Second thing is to understand what is happening to you and your brain when you binge eating. There is an internal war going on within you and understanding what is happening to you is important. I'm sure you feel the tug of war with one side of you saying Stop binge eating right now! and the other half is saying I want to eat everything in sight because I am so stressed out. Keep a journal so you can write down your thoughts. Third is to find the root cause of your compulsive overeating. Do you know why you overeat? What is happening to you when you overeat? Can you picture in your mind what is happening to you and what you are feeling when the binge happens? You need to look for the deep seated reasons as to why you feel the need to binge. The fourth step we talk about is the types of binges that a person can have. There is no one set binge. In fact there are a few of them. You may begin to binge to hide a problem and then the binge turns into an Opportunity Binge where you simply binge because you are alone and have found it a great opportunity to do so. Again, one side of you thinks it is still a good idea to binge so it will find ways to do so. Fifth is to reduce your stress. Stress is a huge contributor to binge eating. So work on reducing your stress by relaxation or meditation, become organized, face fears, and by using facts to determine the severity of situations instead of using your emotions. The sixth step involves a fantastic goal setting process called "chunking". Chunking allows the brain and body to work together so simplistically that there is no resistance to reaching goals. It is totally brilliant! Here's what I mean by that. Let's say your main goal is to drink eight glasses of water a day for a total of 64 ounces. You currently drink about a half a glass a day which is 4 ounces. Now if you were to set that goal and start right away your body would scream and resist. But if you were to take that goal and break it down into tiny "chunks" your mind and body would not even notice the change. So your goal would be, "I will brink 1 glass of water each day for the next four days." Then after the four days are up and you have successfully completed that simple broken down goal you can then add a little bit more to it. Your next goal would then be "i will drink two glasses of water for the next four days". Seventh recommendation is to continually focus on what you want, not on what you don't want. Let me explain that a bit more. Every thought you have creates more thoughts in your mind and they tend to attract like thoughts. You want to make sure the language you are using is always positive in focus. If I were to say I don't want to be a compulsive overeater anymore your brain is hearing the word compulsive overeater. I am stating what I don't want to happen. Instead if I said I want to eat healthy meals and feel happy then I am focusing on what I really do want. I know this may seem so basic but it may be the most powerful thing you can do. And lastly I want to assure you that compulsive overeating can be fully cured. You have the power within you to make the changes your brain and body need to make together in order to make life lasting achievements. You can do and be anything you want!
