The sensation of movement of yourself or your environment is termed vertigo and is one of the most common reasons that people visit a doctor. Many conditions can cause this dizziness or vertigo feeling. For example you could have light headedness or a more significant condition like a tumor. Among the most common causes that is called benign positional vertigo also known as bppv. This article will discuss treatment of this type of vertigo with vertigo exercises.

It is a pity that this form of vertigo is often treated with drugs or medication, which only serve to cover up or mask the symptoms. While they certainly will decrease the feelings of dizziness or nausea they are not correcting the underlying root problem. Next I will discuss the underlying cause of this type of vertigo, why drugs should not be your final solution and the best type of vertigo exercises for you.

The type of vertigo we are focusing on in this article is called benign positional vertigo. The theory behind the mechanism is believed to be loose particles or debris in the balance organs which are found in our inner ear. These are called semicircular canals and are filled with a fluid substance. Our movement will result in movement of the fluid which triggers hair like receptors which then send messages to our brain to inform us about our movement. The loose particles disrupt the receptors so they send incorrect signals to our brain and we feel too much movement and the result is the feeling of vertigo.

To fix this problem we need a solution that takes away the loose debris so the receptors can work properly again. Drugs or medication will not do this. What they do for this condition is suppress your nervous system so you do not feel as dizzy or as nauseous. So in reality the problem of the loose debris is still there, it is just your nervous system is depressed by drugs and the symptoms don't feel as bad. Medication is only treating the symptoms in this case and not the cause of the problem.

The most effective way for dealing with benign positional vertigo is vertigo exercises. However, a large majority of people are given incorrect exercises or bad instructions on the correct exercises. The most commonly given exercises are called habituation exercises. The aim of these exercises is to powerfully stimulate the balance system and overtime have it habituate to stimulation. Therefore you won't feel as dizzy. But the underlying problem is still there and not fixed. The only slight advantage is at least this is a natural approach. These habituation exercises should be given as the second option after some specific initial vertigo exercises.

There is a correct solution to this benign positional vertigo. There are specific vertigo exercises that reposition the particles or debris to a less sensitive area in the semi circular canals. In this position they will not affect the receptors so much. Now this option corrects the underlying problem of the loose debris and does not just cover up the symptoms. If done correctly the exercises are very safe and effective.
