Over the past fifty years of interpreting dreams, I cannot remember a single person of whom I have interpreted dreams for or discussed dreams with who hasn't experienced at least one dream of having been drowning.

To better learn about the dream meanings of drowning dreams and almost nearly drowning in dreams, first you must come to well understand what WATER actually represents in drowning dreams and dreams in general.

Clean, Clear Water Clean, clear water represents God, the Holy Spirit, forgiveness, compassion, purity of heart, physical and spiritual cleansing. Yet, in some dreams water is symbolic of obstacles, challenges and tests. In this type of dream, the width of the area of the water determines the time frame or how long the challenge will last. The depth of water determines the degree of difficulty the test, obstacle, challenge or setback will be.

In most dreams involving drowning, the challenge or test that caused the dream is related to emotional, material, health and or unanswered spirituality questions. It is not unusual for dreams of drowning to transfer into our personal and financial lives, as a result of problems, events or situations where we feel trapped in and can find no answers or solutions.

One of the major reasons for the dreamer to have dreamed that he is drowning, under water or being pulled under water physically helpless to reach the surface represents a struggle involving the dreamer's family, health, relationship, career, job or finances that is materializing in the dream depicted in the dreamer as the act of drowning. In the same way, emptiness, sorrow, remorse, self-pity, grief, loneliness, escape, giving up, depression, abandonment, emotional stress and a lack of spirituality often results in the dreamer experiencing dreams of drowning.

For The Christian: Although Christians and non Christians both can experience dreams of drowning for the same reasons, for the most part, when the average balanced Christian has a dream other than the ones mentioned represents a different set of challenges. These challenges can involve blessings or gifts that God is about to bestow upon them. Often, the blessing or gift will be determined by how well or to what degree the dreamer overcomes the challenge or testing of faith acted out in the dream.

In like manner, as with non Christians, the Christian also experiences dreams of drowning for having turned his back on God, did or is about to backslide into flesh nature, worldly temptations or a returning to an unhealthy relationship or old habit, and the drowning dream is symbolic of God calling a Christian back to repentance.

For the dreamer to dream he is drowning yet managing by his own strength and will to overcome the situation in pulling himself back up to the surface of the water represents that regardless of the enormity of the obstacle, problem or pressure he's feeling and facing in the real world, he will be given answer toward solution in further dream messages. And he will ultimately find a way to clearing away the problem reclaiming his life back to normal.

To Dive Into Clean Clear Water, to dive into clear water when the dreamer sees the bottom represents strength, stability, a self starter, having foresight and the ability to plan ahead.

To Dive Into Dirty Murky Water: For the dreamer to dive into dirty or murky water and he does not see the bottom represents a headstrong person who abandons logic, acts hastily and the dreamer does not think ahead or plan for the future. He is self-absorbed, prideful, selfish, thinks only of himself, what he wants and he is not considerate of others or their feelings.

For the dreamer to dream he is drowning or under the water or being pulled under Dirty or Murky water in a dream represents that he is involved in one or more of the following: guilt, deceit, lies, illusion, betrayal, back stabbing, gossip, secrets, manipulation of someone, sexual bondage/addiction, bad habits, or a hidden agenda and the guilt or the fear of being found out is surfacing in his dream life in the form of him drowning or nearly drowning in a dream.
