But don't despair, there is a way to use your computer all day and still have eyes that aren't tired and strained. Here are a few easy ways to do that. The majority of society today has to spend almost the whole week in front of a screen, forced through work, or voluntarily because we socialize that way. What most people don't know though is, that too much time stuck to the monitor can cause some serious defects to our eyes when we don't take care of our precious sight. Eyestrain is the most common complaint. Symptoms can include: red, watery or irritated eyes; tired achy, or heavy feeling eyelids; trouble focusing; eye muscle spasms; and headache. Changing the work environment, resting the eyes or wearing the proper glasses can often relieve these symptoms. We will talk about each one of these individually. Change Your Workplace (The Cubical, Not The Boss, Even Though... Na) Fire your boss... no, no, I'm joking. Move your screen a bit further away from you, to the same distance you can comfortably read. The best distance for a monitor is 19 - 27 inches. Ensure that the upper edge of the screen is just below the height of your eyes. When writing something, put it on a stand that holds it up, so you don't have to angle your neck down whole the time. Strain on the neck equals bad eyesight, you don't want to do that, do you? Try to minimize light reflection and glare. You may need to move your desk so that bright lights are not in your field of vision. You can also change light bulbs to a lower wattage and get an anti-glare screen for over your monitor. Remember when your mother told you not to read in the dark or you would ruin your eyes. She was right. Don't use your computer in the dark either. The contrast between the light from the computer screen and the background light will strain your eyes. Change your screen contrast settings to be easy on the eyes, and consider a bigger font size. Nobody will tell you that you are getting blind... Relax Your Eyes Relax your eyes in regular intervals. Change the focal length, meaning to look at some distant object, at least 20 feet away, every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. Do that also when you are at home. Long hours stuck to any type of screen (that includes that TV) is the reason for fatigue in the eyes, eye pain and eye problems. Blinking is essential for your eye health, as it keep you eyes moist. We tend to put blinking low on our priority list when working highly focused on something, so we have to find a way to keep doing it... I use pencil and paper instead of my brain, I find that easier... So I have a sticky note on my computer saying REMEMBER TO BLINK, and that does the trick. I visualize this sticky note as my husband and "wink" to him every once in a while with my eyes. You could try that. Working With The Correct Type Of Glasses Some people with glasses might have to change the kind of glasses they wear while working with monitors. Others don't usually wear glasses at all, but need some help to relax their eyes while looking at screens. If you really have to, use pinhole glasses, don't start using glasses the optometrist prescribes. Better learn how to relax your eyes naturally. The Healthier The Eyes, The Better Keeping your eyes healthy should be as important as keeping your heart healthy. Make sure you eat plenty of vegetables that are high in beta carotene. Most yellow and orange vegetables fit into this category. Also, foods rich in lutein are good to your eye health. These include leafy greens, corn and red peppers.
