The various types of guillotine type cutters are those most commonly seen on lighters. These feature a hole through which the cigar is placed in the blade which is dropped through the cigar by action of the thumb. For smaller gauge cigars, a straight-edge blade will generally provide adequate results. For thicker gauges, many smokers prefer to use a guillotine within angled blade. The angled blade makes a cleaner cut through thicker cigars and can result in easier smoking.

There are those individuals who prefer a scissor-style cutter. These devices are among the oldest types on the market and some users find the cuts they produce inadequate. Most often, the complaint is that the cut is rather sloppy compared to the ultra-clean lines offered by a guillotine-style cigar cutter. This may come down to one's technique but oftentimes it is simply a question of the smoker's preference.

Some guillotine cutters have double edges. These are provided on some lighters but it is much more common to see the single-edge models. This is simply a question of safety. Because the lighter is commonly carried in one's pocket, there is always the chance that one may cut themselves when blindly digging for the device. Whichever type of cutter is chosen, one must make certain that they take care of it as they would any other quality smoking implement.

The size of the lighter will play into what type of cutter is attached. For instance, very large gauge cigars require a large gauge cutter and, thus, a large lighter. They are also usually cut with an angled blade which means the guillotine will likely be provided with as much. Some lighters may include other implements such as pipe tools. Whichever one is chosen, they are enormously convenient and useful multi-tool devices.
