The Chinese Crested breed is considered as a toy group breed and it stands only 12 inches in height and weighs no more than 10 pounds in weight. Most of the breeds in the toy group are undeniably cuddly and fluffy to touch but there is a variety of the Chinese Crested breed that is cuddly yet far from fluffy. This breed often produces two varieties that are either hairy or hairless and whatever the outcome is, it is loved by many people still around the world. There are two varieties of the Chinese Crested dog, the Powderpuff and the Hairless. The Hairless variety is the one that doesn't have hair on most part of its body except the head, paws and tail. The exposed skin is just like human skin that's smooth to touch but is prone to damages like wound, acne or sunburn. On the other hand, the Powderpuff or simply Puff, is the variety that possesses a double coat of long and smooth hairs. Its hair can grow so long it will cover its whole body but the general accepted cut for the Puff is a trimmed hair on the muzzle. The Chinese Crested breed is considered as hypoallergenic therefore it is safe for people who are allergic to dog hair. The two varieties may look distinct from each other but they are born from the same litter and the hairlessness of a Chinese Crested isn't considered an abnormality. The grooming needs of these two varieties are different as the Puff needs regular hair brushing in order to prevent its hair from matting. The Hairless variety should be cared for like a human skin meaning after every bath or whenever it will have to be out in the outdoors, its skin has to be moisturized by lotions or creams in order to avoid patching, drying and sunburn. The Chinese Crested dog, whether a Puff or Hairless, is naturally sweet, affectionate, very friendly and playful. They love to be cuddled by humans and they have a dire need to have human companionship. It loves playing with children and is actually sweet and affectionate to them and is playful and peaceful with other animals as well. They may look fragile for their size but the Chinese Crested dogs are intelligent, agile and are able to learn and perform tricks. In fact, they are often seen competing at various dog sporting events such as agility, conformation and obedience competitions. They are very devoted and loyal little pets and they wish to please their master eagerly; therefore, training them is quite easy and fast unlike other stubborn dogs. The Hairless variety is often conceived as an ugly dog and therefore, is often a contestant in the "Worlds Ugliest Dog" competition. A Hairless named Sam was the champion of the competition for two consecutive years in 2004 and 2005. He died in 2006 due to old age and to this day, many consider him as the ugliest dog in the world. The breed did not come from China unlike its name suggests but in fact from Africa. There it was called as the African Hairless Terrier and Chinese merchant ships took them in as ratters on the ships. The breed first appeared in the Western countries in 1885, was first founded as an American breed club in 1979 and first recognized by AKC as a breed in 1991.
