Stress is all around us: we have work to contend with, bills, politics, kids, health problems and on and on; but one thing that most of us do not have to put up with that a small percentage of the population does; is excessive sweating in the form of armpit sweating. Life is hard enough without adding this problem into the mix, and many people find they just can't deal with it and prefer to avoid social gatherings and public places because they are embarrassed to be seen with dripping armpits and soaked smelly clothes.

And it's not usually just one area of the body that is affected when armpit sweating becomes a problem. Quite often the hands or feet, or both, are involved as well and not only are you worried about whether your armpits are surrounded by a wet clammy circle on your clothes, but also whether your feet will smell when you remove your shoes, or will your hand be clammy and wet when you shake someone's hand. All these things come into play with armpit sweating, more commonly known in scientific areas as axillary hyperhidrosis. What is going on is that something triggers an emotional response in the person and the body responds by sweating profusely; generating so much sweat that it dribbles down your sides and soaks your clothes as well as mixing with the opportunistic bacteria residing on the skin that now take up residence in the sweat and begin to produce odor. So now, not only are you wet and uncomfortable, but you smell.

First impressions are important to most people, not only to those in the working world, but also in social situations where you want to put your best face forward and not be shunned or ignored by the public in general. Approximately 1% of the population is suffering from the effects of armpit sweating and every time they prepare for a new venture, meeting new people, a night out on the town, or anything else that involves looking their best; guess what, the stress of the situation usually triggers the bodies response, and for many of them, the choice is now just to stay home because they cannot control the sweat soaking their clothes and ruining their plans and making them self conscious.

The more technical side of the affliction concerns what actually causes armpit sweating in such volumes and what is happening. The glands that are involved in sweat production are the apocrine glands and the eccrine glands and they each have their own function. The apocrine glands are actually outgrowths of the hair follicles and produce a thick, viscous sweat which leads to odor production when coming in contact with skin bacteria. The eccrine glands produce the clear, watery portion of the sweat, and are primarily for thermal regulation and function to cool down the overheated body, and do not produce the sweat that causes odor.

On the market place are products that can help with most forms of armpit sweating and some of these are: Botox, Odaban, Drysol, and Maxim. They are useful in the cases of people who do not have the more severe form of excessive sweating and can be readily found in any of the pharmacies or drug stores. Unfortunately, the only remedy that will work for folks who have the most extreme form of armpit sweating is some form of surgery, and that comes with some problems of its own.

If you are looking for a 100% cure rate with surgery for any form of armpit sweating or excessive sweating, you are fooling yourself. Non of the surgical procedures available can offer that guarantee and some of them have side effects that you should consider before thinking about surgery. For example; if you opt for one of the surgery types available which is excising the skin, then you must be prepared for the possibility of loss of mobility in the affected area post-surgery, and some scarring of the skin. With the other form of surgery, superficial liposuction; the glands themselves are removed with minimal scarring.

With the advances in technology and treatments that we have available to us today, there is hope for those of us who suffer everyday from the effects of armpit sweating and all the tawdry problems that go along with it. With the proper care from a doctor, or conservative treatment methods, or even surgery; armpit sweating can be controlled so that the folks who have the problem can enjoy life more and not suffer the embarrassment of wet, smelly clothes and ruined first impressions.
