We are being bombarded with bad news all the time about redundancies, job losses, cut backs, shorter hours and other ways companies are having to cope with staying afloat and make it through these bad years. We are being bombarded with bad news all the time about redundancies, job losses, cut backs, shorter hours and other ways companies are having to cope with staying afloat and make it through these bad years. I live in New Zealand and we are being told that our country is not being hit as hard as others, but 1200 people a week are being made redundant here. At this rate, there will be no one left working as our country is such a small one with only 4 million people. This is all very depressing and I know many are wondering how they are going to get through the next few months let alone years. I have 2 children coming out of university shortly at the end of the year and although highly qualified, where are the jobs, non existent. White collar workers used to be immune to redundancies but now whole companies are folding. The whole of the fabric of society is changing and with it we need to re think things possibly outside the normal square of life to be the ones that succeed. During depressions and wars there were always those that profited from the downturn some of them making their fortunes. An example is my fathers uncle designed airplane engines in the Second World War in Britain and became a millionaire. Companies that made ammunitions and arms made millions, money beyond their wildest dreams. Sometimes it is being at the right place at the right time but often these people have the foresight and tenacity to look at something a new way. My friend, the world is changing and we need to think differently, instead of look for employment what about being your own boss? What about buying your own job? My husband, at 56 found himself with out a job and instead of getting depressed he went out looking for a small business to buy. He bought a painting a decorating business for $35,000 NZ dollars. That was a year ago. Unfortunately painting your house is the last thing you want to do when you do not have much money. So I bought into a totally different business which is booming and growing beyond anticipation. I had no previous knowledge of the skills I am using now but have had the most amazing training and support which continues to, be ongoing. So if you are looking for a business to buy and take control of your life back you need to be careful about what you get into. Do your homework well as there are good opportunities as well as bad. You need good compensation plans and good commissions and a pension for a start.
