Beginning with the 18th century, the gold medals have been awarded to many fields related or not to various academic fields. The only medal that is made out entirely out of gold is the Nobel Prize medal. This is made out of 18 karat green gold and it is plated with a 24 karat gold leaf. The other medals are just gold plated. Mostly in sport competitions, the metals from which the medals are made from represent the place on the podium. So the gold medal is given to the person that has own the first prize, the silver medal is given to the person that has own the second prize and the bronze medal is awarded to the one that has won the third prize. This separation of the medals is meant to characterize the Ages of Man in the Greek Mythology. The golden age stand for the times when the man was living among the gods, the silver age represents the youth of the man that lasted a hundred years and the bronze age represents the era of the heroes. In the modern Olympic Games of our days, the athletes that are competing are given medals but in the ancient Olympic Games there were no medals given to the best athletes. As the gold medals are not actually made out of the precious metal, the name stands more for its color. Today medals are awarded even in other competitive fields like singing and writing.
