Driving without insurance is an offence in most parts of the country. But even though we can't argue about it's usefulness, the extra burden it is makes us wish to go without. Bearing in mind that we can't stay law-abiding without this policy, we are left with only one more viable option: Buy adequate coverage at the barest minimum cost. This article shares five not-so-common ways you can get far cheaper rates without putting yourself at risk...

1. You might be duplicating coverage and paying more unnecessarily if you have a very good health insurance coverage and also an extensive personal injury protection on your auto insurance policy. For places where an auto policy must include it, make it the bare minimum since you already have this covered in your health policy. It doesn't make sense to pay premiums that won't translate to benefits.

2. Women get better rates than men because statistics show they are "better" drivers. Therefore, if you're married, buy your auto insurance policy in the wife's name and let the man be listed as a secondary driver. Although this might not go down well with some men folks, it will help reduce what your family pays for auto insurance.

3. If you can, take a course in defensive driving because this guarantees a good discount from most insurance carriers. The fact that such training programs make a driver less accident prone is a major reason for this discount. If you fall into one of those age brackets that are considered high risk, then you certainly will benefit from this type of course. Over the course of, say twenty years, you'll definitely save several thousands in premium dollars for being certified a defensive driver. So the long and short of this is that you should get trained in defensive driving. Finally, make sure your insurer is informed once you are certified so you can enjoy well-deserved lower rates.

4. If you must quickly get something inside, turn your car off, lock up and pocket your keys. Don't leave your car unlocked and running. The only easier thing for a thief would be if you handed over your keys as a gift. Car thieves are known to go for easy targets. And what could be easier than a car that's ready to be driven away -- It takes just seconds.

5. Do you know that some folks are paying much more in auto insurance because of where their homes are? Homes in the same neighborhood may fall under different risk zones as far as your insurer is concerned.

So, as part of your home shopping activities, check how this neighborhood will affect your auto insurance rate. This doesn't come readily to mind when you're shopping for a new home. Does it?

Since you may live in the same home for decades to come, a difference of $250 in auto insurance rates would amount to thousands over the years.
