The big debate over healthcare reform still rages on. It has was last year that President Obama sighed the Affordable Care Act and the half truths and deliberate misinterpretation of the provisions that are outlined in it go on. It takes only one time for a person to hear something negative for it to become in their minds a fact. Especially if the misinformation comes from a source they think they can trust.

Let's look at a few numbers. The Medicare Advantage is for the elderly and we have heard a lot about the impact that the new provisions will have there. Sad to say most has been negative and grossly exaggerated. But what will this new reform mean for those of us who are not in that bracket yet.

The projections you are about to read are cumulative. The target year is 2019. It is believed that by this year over 24 million will purchase insurance through a new system of exchanges. Another 16 million will be enrolled in the Childrens' Insurance programs and Medicaid. This is up 40 million from what we have now.

The projection goes on to include an adjustment for those who simply decline to purchase healthcare and those who have healthcare through their place of employment. Still the number is a staggering 32 million. These are 32 million Americans that no longer will be living in fear of disease and sickness. These are 32 million people who will be getting preventive care and this will lower the cost of treating these diseases. It is more costly to treat a disease after it has progressed than it is at the beginning stages.

This is not only a benefit for them but also for every one of us. A healthy nation can only improve its standings in all areas of life. The people that this reform will help the most are low to moderate-income families and individuals. These are the ones who work at jobs that are important to the rest of us but do not pay a wage that can be stretched to include insurance.

The plan is trying to do for us what we have been unwilling to admit was wrong in this nation. Our doctors and insurance companies have long been putting financial gain above the health of the individual. Insurance companies literally decide who will live and who will die. The plan expands the coverage of existing entities to cover more people at lower costs. If you have ever looked at a hospital bill you will understand the critical nature of this type of reform.

If you are given two aspirin you or your insurance company will pay for an entire bottle. And the price of that bottle is nothing like at the local pharmacy. What is wrong with this picture is what the healthcare reform is meant to address. Is the plan perfect, of course it isn't but it is a step toward what healthcare should be in one of the richest nations on planet earth.
