It would take more than the space of this article to untangle that ball of yarn. We can look at some strategies for finding relevant information, getting help if you need it, and a few pitfalls to avoid.

You do not have to "go it alone." There are many reputable insurance professionals that are ready and able to help you. How do you find a good one? Some questions you should ask to determine if you are dealing with one:

1)Is the agent an independent agent? You want the answer to be yes. An independent agent is not tied to just one carrier. They can talk to you and provide information about all of the plans available in your area. Having access to info on many plans will insure that you can pick the right one for you. Avoid agents that work for one carrier. If an agent can only offer plans from one carrier, you may never even see the plan that may have been right for you. You also run the risk that if the agent separates from that company he/she will no longer be able to service your policy for you. In effect leaving you without an agent.

2) Always remember that the this is about you and your unique situation. A competent, professional agent will ask questions about your lifestyle, your health , how much you plan to travel, what you can afford. All of these factors should have an impact on your choice. No two cases are alike.

3)You will definitely find it beneficial to work with an agent or broker who's main focus is Medicare and Medicare Supplement Insurance. This is because that agent will be knowledgeable about the most current information. There are many different types of insurance and much to know about each one. Find an agent who has narrowed their focus. Dealing with someone who is an expert in one area is better than dealing with someone who has general knowledge in a lot of areas.

4)How long has the agent been in business? Each year thousands of people get into the insurance business. Each year the vast majority of those new agents leave the insurance business. Work with an agent who has established longevity in the industry and demonstrated a commitment to it. Avoid brand new agents. This will ensure that your agent will be there down the line for customer service.

5)If you are truly going to benefit form working with an agent, that agent will speak to you in plain English. They will take the time to answer your questions and make sure that you really comprehend your options and how each option impacts your specific circumstances. You will not continue to be confused, rather you will move forward with the assurance that you had the facts and understanding to make the right decision.

6) At the end of the day, it should be very clear to you that the agent or broker has your interests in mind, not theirs. Even though every one is in business to make a living, a broker living by his ethics will always strive to make certain that each and every client is in a better position for having met him or her. A good broker knows that this is how to grow a business.

Help is available. Just take a deep breath, remember these points and you will find the right person to help you understand your Medicare and Medicare Supplement Plan options.
