Medical insurance is something that everybody should have in today's world. The growing cost of seeking care from a health professional, urgent care center, or a hospital makes it financially dangerous for anyone to live without some type of health care insurance coverage.

Research has shown that nearly 40 million people in the US are currently without health insurance. Many either work for an employer who does not offer a health care plan, are self employed, or work part-time and are not eligible for medical coverage from their employer. These people are at a major financial risk and are an accident or illness away from potential financial ruin.

There is a large segment of working Americans who are now being forced to turn down the coverage offered to them through their employer. The cost of the coverage is more than they can afford to pay with little options for reduced coverage plans.

There are a lot of working and former working adults like the unemployed, part-time workers, contract workers, and self employed small business owners who simply can't afford a medical insurance policy or don't qualify due to health reasons. It is estimate that 15% of the US population that have no health benefits according to the Census Bureau.

The long term personal effects of this is difficult to measure since it means that young kids don't visit a doctor unless they're severely ill. Regrettably this approach, though seeming to save money in the short term, can be very destructive to the long term healthcare needs of the child.

But regardless, it is still important that everybody have some health insurance coverage no matter how small the policy. Many providers offer discount plans for doctors visits and limited benefits for hospital stays.

Final Remarks

There are many medical insurance plans that are feasible options for the 40 million uninsured Americans if they knew where to look. Many carriers now provide health plans with high deductibles and health savings accounts.
