There are drivers who are actually accidents looking for where to happen. Drivers in this group are usually reckless or have many accidents against their names. On the other hand, there are drivers who obey all traffic rules and do their utmost to ensure they drive responsibly. You certainly deserve a good discount if you are one of those great drivers who do all within their powers to keep our roads safer...

Unless you've NOT driven for years, NOT having an accident on your record over the course of several could only mean that you're a careful person. And believe it or not, you won't wake up one morning to become a very reckless driver. Insurers are definitely NOT unaware of this. In fact they know that if you're careful in your younger days, you'll only become more careful as you get older all things being equal.

This entitles you to a good driver discount. And since a No Claims bonus comes only to great drivers, you should also be eligible for it.

So who and who are eligible?

1. It's only for those who are at least 25 years old. Younger drivers are NOT eligible. The argument is that younger drivers have NOT built enough driving history to be rightly classified.

2. Your driving record has to be impeccable. No moving violations or tickets in at least three years. This is the standard time although some insurers might set a long time frame for various reasons.

3. To qualify you also must maintain an excellent credit rating. Anything less will disqualify you.

These three are basic things you must have to be considered a good driver or what is called a Preferred Risk Driver in the insurance industry.

Bear in mind also that completing a course aim at improving your driving will also help you qualify. One good example is taking a course in defensive driving.

But take note that even though two drivers might be classified as good drivers or Preferred Risk Drivers, the difference in their rates might be a few hundred dollars apart. Also bear in mind that some insurance carriers will have lower rates for your profile than most. This means you'll either pay a lot more or less depending on the insurance company you settle for.

So how do you ensure you get the right insurer? Simple! Do very thorough comparison shopping -- Get and compare quotes from many insurance carriers. Those who are favorably disposed to your profile will return lower quotes without compromising coverage quality. Even though this will take you only a few minutes, the savings you make could easily amount to much when spread over years.
