What are things to look out for when buying college student health insurance?
In your excitement that you, too, now have a college student, have you taken some time to see if your health insurance plan is adequate? You definitely don't want to find out too late that your college kid does NOT have adequate health insurance coverage. This becomes more important if you're NOT sure if your current plan gives any form of coverage for your kids in college. What steps should you take in ensuring they are well covered? What are things to look out for when buying college student health insurance? 1. What provisions does the plan have in case of emergencies? What would happen if your kid has an emergency? Would there be need for a prior approval? What are the conditions for certain benefits to kick in? Will you have to be consulted for approval before action is taken? They'd be away from home for the greater part of their college years -- Take note of that. Delays can cause avoidable complications. Don't buy any plan that doesn't satisfy you in every way. 2. What's the flexibility in the use of health care providers and facilities? Which do you prefer: An EPO, PPO, HMO or a policy that gives your wider options? Do you know which would serve your best interests: HMO, PPO, EPO or something else? It's very important to be aware of the implications of choosing a given type with respect to quality of health care delivery. 3. What happens when your kid is on vacation? Will they still be covered? If so, to what extent? If not, do you have contingency plans or you just hope nothing will go wrong? 4. What happens if a student has classes during the breaks? Will they still be covered by the policy? If so, to what extent? 5. What if your kid has pre-existing conditions? This is important if your kid has one of such conditions. The more prone to illness your kid is, the more you must be willing to pay albeit more to ensure they get the very best health care while they're away. It's a great thing to send your kid to college. But you will be happier to know that you've done your best to ensure that they stay in good health through it. Would like to spend less without compromising coverage? Yes, take some time out to comparison shop. Obtain quotes from A rated insurers, compare plans that meet your requirements and pick whichever represent the best in value and price. It will take you just about five minutes per site. However, you'll easily save several hundred dollars if you do this right. Important NOTE: By law, providers cannot give lower rates for a particular plan. Nevertheless, to ensure they have the correct rates for different risk profiles (and by so doing stay competitive and turn some profits) they instead offer very many assorted plans for these very specific profiles. At the moment, there are above 10,000 such plans for customers to choose from. The same thing as having different rates for, say, 10 plans if you ask me -- Only more confusing ). You'd have to obtain a good number of quotes, compare plans and then buy whichever offers the best price/value.
