A Medicare supplemental plan is also known as Medigap and it is a private insurance package that is meant to complement your existing Medical coverage. It is also called Medigap because this supplemental package helps cover some of the health costs, or gaps, that your original Medical insurance does not cover.

Medicare is the principal health insurance you receive through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This is the largest health system that exists in the United States and it covers about forty million of the country's citizens. Those who are 65 and older, those who are younger than 65 but disabled and those individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease are included in coverage. It is a good health program however, it does not necessarily cover all medical costs.

The supplemental insurance may also be able to cover certain things that your prime Medical does not cover. What happens is that Medical will cover as much as it will and pay its share. Then your supplemental insurance comes into effect and if it is within their coverage, they will pay their share.

All the different insurance companies that provide Medigap for Medicare are required to offer the same benefits with each different plan, also known as standardized or modernized Medigap. This means that no matter which company you purchase your policy through, you will receive the same type of benefits.

A more specific description on modernized or standardized Medicare packages is that they are labeled with letters of the alphabet starting with A through F. All Plan A's will offer the same type of package across different companies, all Plan B's will be the same among different companies, and etc. It is the cost of each package that usually is the only difference in Medicare packages offered through different companies. Insurance companies are not required to offer all of the packages.

Plan F seems to be the most prevalent package among all because the policy covers one hundred percent of all the benefits that fall under Medical supplemental insurance. Some of the benefits are hospice care, nursing facility care, and emergencies during foreign travel.

Please note that if you are married, your spouse will not be covered under your Medigap. He or she must purchase their own supplemental plan in order to receive the benefits of having a supplemental.

You normally have to have Medicare parts A and B in order to be eligible for a Medigap package. You will have to pay a premium on your Medigap in addition to your required premium for part B Medicare.

You may find more detailed information through the internet. There is a wealth of information regarding who provides these Medicare supplemental insurance policies, how much they are and to see whether or not you are eligible to apply first for Medicare and also find out which supplemental would suit your needs best.
