The medical tourism industry has received a valuable boost from the introduction of Medical Travel Insurance that has been designed specifically for the associated risks of medical travellers.

Travel insurance is not valid if you are travelling for an elective procedure abroad. The medical tourism industry has received a huge boost from the introduction of such policies. For most people travel insurance is well know for trip cancellation and lost luggage which will reimburse you in the event of a cancelled trip due to unforeseen circumstances that includes getting sick or losing your job.

You must take into account that outside of your planned treatment, there could be other unrelated medical or dental emergencies that require admission to hospital. Without travel insurance you will find the cost of private medical extremely expensive which without cover or proof of available funds you will find it difficult to be admitted to hospital

I have personal experience of a family member travelling with a pre excisting medical condition to Canada and an unexpected medical emergency that needed life saving surgery was needed, however due to there been no medical insurance the money had to be wired over to the hospital before they would operate.

The biggest advantage of medical travel insurance is the peace of mind that you receive in the event of an extended stay due to complication, or in extreme cases a return trip. Many people travel abroad for surgery due to cost savings, however these will be wiped out if you have to return to the country of your surgey to have any rectification because the surgeon will never cover the cost of your return flight and hotel. The latest developments within the medical travel insurance market are very encouraging with new policies including a fix at home clause meaning that in the event of a problem, you can have this rectified with an approved surgeon in the country of your residence, which for most would be the prefered solution.
