As we finally begin to see signs that the economy is improving, at the same time credit card counseling services continue to see growth as consumers struggle with credit card debt. It is now a widely held belief that credit card debt amongst American consumers has now reached $1 trillion. That astronomical figure was unimaginable just a decade ago. But now it is reality.

Many credit card companies have stopped issuing credit cards to consumers altogether unless they have absolutely pristine credit ratings, which not too many people have. As I'm sure you remember, it seemed like just yesterday that we were all bombarded with credit card solicitations everywhere we turned. We couldn't turn on the TV, open our mail boxes, or read a newspaper without seeing sales pitches from the major credit card companies.

Once money flowed freely and almost anyone could obtain one or more credit cards. Now over a thousand credit card counseling services exist to help over 400,000 consumers find their way out of debt. Things have change drastically.

The problem will more than likely get worse before it gets better too. With the new credit card reform legislation the credit card issuers have raised interest rates on millions of cardholders prior to the new laws going into effect. What this will result in, I believe, is more and more people will go into default and declare bankruptcy because they will not be able to afford to make the higher credit card payments on their monthly balances.

And that is where we will really see the credit card counseling services take off in popularity. The credit card companies certainly do not want to see anyone go into default or bankruptcy because they will get nothing. They will however be willing to negotiate with consumers to lower interest rates for those that want to do the right thing and pay off their debt but are truly struggling.

Credit card counseling and debt consolidation services do basically the same thing. In addition to working as a mediator between the lender and the borrower, they provide education and counseling services to the borrower to help them find options and avoid future problems. They help them understand their financial situation clearly.

A representative from one of these services will sit down with the consumer and identify the various causes of their debt, options for reducing the debt and steps they can take to avoid having the same problem in the future. They will then do what they can to find a workable agreement between the credit card company and the individual.

When consumers enter into an agreement with credit card counseling services their debt is consolidated into one monthly payment which the debt consolidation company collects and distributes to the various creditors. A program will typically take 4 to 5 years to complete. While the program is going on the consumer will no longer have an open line of credit with their credit cards. They will in effect be taken away from them and their accounts will be closed.
